In response to recent reports of record numbers of DHS apprehensions during fiscal year 2021, I wanted to share historical data I tabulated while conducting research for The Deportation Machine: America’s Long History of Expelling Immigrants (Princeton University Press, 2020). As I describe at length in the book, and note in this thread on Twitter, we must recognize the politics of immigration statistics and the role US policies have played in manufacturing border crises and fomenting xenophobia.
